Today I would like to share with you some ideas I had about using Canary Coquette Vintage Cotton Yarn. Canary yellow is a beautiful, refreshing, bright colour. Here are some suggestions you might find interesting to try out.

Ruffled Cardigan - This incredible piece is knitted in the colours Aquamarine for the main body and Amethyst for the ruffle. How about a combination of Old Lace with Canary as an accent colour?

My next suggestion would be the Lily Jacket. Here you will need 3 colours of Coquette Vintage Cotton Yarn, the pattern suggestion is: Wine, Carnation and Oyster. How about Old Lace, Oyster and Canary?

Crochet Daffodil for Marie Curie Cancer Care

March is the month that Spring finally arrives and a riot of colour erupts as daffodils, crocuses and other Spring bulbs burst into bloom. March is also the month that the wonderful charity Marie Curie Cancer Care holds its annual Daffodil Appeal fundraising event with this iconic flower as its symbol. Supporters are encouraged to sell the charity’s own daffodil buttonholes and to hold events to raise money. Selling handmade daffodils is an increasingly popular option.

Of course, daffodils are not always just one colour, so you could create a two-tone one by knitting the trumpet in Pumpkin Orange Coquette yarn. You could also try crocheting your daffodils in one of our other yarns. Cassie Camisole Pattern

Susie Johns is one of knitshop.co.uk’s favourite designers, so we’re delighted to be able to offer crochet fans the chance to make one of her prettiest creations, the Cassie Camisol Top. 

This strapy top looks fantastic crocheted in brightly-coloured cotton yarn and looks great paired with jeans. If you’re lucky enough to be going somewhere sunny on holiday, Camisol would be a great staple for your summer wardrobe. Of course, we’re also still holding out hopes of a Great British Summer.

Cassie is crocheted as a single piece using a 3mm crochet hook. The pretty lace design is made using a combination of trebles for the top and a shell pattern for the lower part. The shell pattern created by missing stitches every so often. Our pattern makes it really clear where you need to do so.

You won’t need to do any sewing up at the end, but you will need thirteen 6mm buttons and a length of silky ribbon. This lovely top looks great with either matching ribbon or a contrasting one.

Cassie Camisol is made using only three balls of Susan Crawford's Coquette Vintage Cotton Yarn. These cost £4.95 each per 50g ball, meaning Camisol is a really great value make, too.

Coquette is available in thirteen vintage inspired colours from the 1930s to 1950s and comes in 50g balls of approximately 125m each. The 4ply mercerised cotton yarn works best with 3mm to 3.75mm needles or hooks. To chime with the vintage vibe, Coquette is wound in a long bobbin with a center pull, making for tangle-free knitting and crochet projects.

We think Cassie Camisol would look stunning in the more vibrant shades of Coquette such as Carnation, Wine or Flame. Whichever colour you decide on, the yarn will reward you for adding detail by showing it off to great effect.

Although the techniques used to make this beautiful Camisol are straightforward once you’ve mastered them, we don’t recommend this as a first crochet garment project. It’s ideal, though, if you’re looking to take your crochet skills to the next level.

Crochet a daffodil for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Spring is here at last and it’s wonderful to see all the flowers on show. Daffodils are a particularly inspiring sight and we’ve got a brand-new pattern to share with you that means you’ll be able to enjoy daffodils in your home all year round.

knitshop.co.uk founder Julieta Brandao has designed a wonderful daffodil pattern as a means of fundraising for Marie Curie Cancer Care. The charity has the daffodil as its symbol and runs a Daffodil Appeal fundraising drive each March.

Julieta says “The Marie Curie Appeal is a cause that is very close to me and I wanted to find a way to support the charity not just in March but all year around. All proceeds from the sale of this pattern will go to the Marie Curie Appeal.”

The daffodil pattern [link to be added] is worked on a 3mm crochet hook using knitshop.co.uk’s Coquette Vintage Cotton Yarn. The main part of the flower is worked in the round using a combination of trebles and double crochet stitches. The petals are created separately and use slip stitches to cluster stitches together. There’s also a quadruple treble cluster stitch in the pattern that is great fun to work. It helps give the daffodil a really distinctive shape. Once you’ve made enough petals and your main flower you just need to sew them together.

Daffodils are especially nice with the first signs of sunshine!

 

The Daffodil crochet pattern is being sold as a kit containing the yarn, crochet hook and pattern to complete your daffodils. The kit contains a 50g ball of knitshop.co.uk Coquette Vintage Cotton Yarn in Canary Yellow, a 3mm crochet hook and, of course, the pattern to make your daffodil. The kit costs £9.95, of which £9 will go straight to Marie Curie Cancer Care. Alternatively, you can buy Julieta’s Daffodil crochet pattern on its own for £3. In this case, the entire £3 will be donated to the charity. 

Once assembled it’s up to you how to you want to display your beautiful springtime bloom. You could attach it to a headband or make a stem for it from pipe cleaners or wire covered in green yarn. You could also add a brooch back attached to a piece of felt and pin your Daffodil Appeal to a jacket to show everyone your support for the wonderful nurses at Marie Curie Cancer Care.

July Workshops

Boost your crochet skills this July

Summer lends itself to cool cottons and lighter knits, so this month’s workshops focus on some of the more delicate projects you can get stuck into.

We start July with a crochet class covering how to read a pattern containing instructions for lacework. Our Lace Crochet workshop on Friday 12 July is ideal for anyone who knows how to crochet and wants to learn how to combine the tight chains of double and treble crochet with the more open fabric that you can create with lace. We’ll build on the basic doubles you know to how make and show you how to make double doubles, slips and half trebles to add variety to your crochet design. We’ll be using fine crochet threads and small steel crochet hooks, so prepare to concentrate in order to complete your first lacy crochet project. 

If you like the idea of crochet but haven’t yet mastered holding a crochet hook and turning chains, our Crochet For Beginners class on Friday 19 July is just for you. We’ll use the techniques demonstrated in this two-hour class to get you started on your first crochet ‘make’. Choose whether you’d prefer to crochet a flower or to learn how to make a classic Granny square.

With the school holidays starting later this month, we’ll also be offering two classes aimed at under-16s. Our Let’s Get Hooked class on Friday 19 July and 26 July shows kids aged over five how to knit with their fingers. Those who quickly master the technique of finger-knitting will then get the chance to try their hand at crochet.

All classes are held at our Outlet Boutique at 326 Lee High Road, SE13 5PJ from 11am to 1pm.

We’ll provide all the materials needed for each class and, where relevant, give you a pattern to take away with you so you can complete a project you started in our workshop at home. We’ll also provide plenty of support, so feel free to email or call us should you get stuck with a project we’ve shown you in our classes.

Note that children need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times when attending knitshop.co.uk classes. Hot and cold refreshments will be provided.

Once you’ve learned the basics you’ll be able to try making some of the downloading projects in our pattern library or featured in our magazines. We’ve a great selection of cotton yarns and crochet hooks to get you started.

Crochet Easter Eggs
brighten up your home for the Easter Holidays

Fancy something a bit different this Easter? Something crafty and crocheted? knitshop.co.uk has a great new Easter egg pattern for you to try.

Decorated eggs are a tradition in many countries. The most famous are Russia’s Faberge eggs. Although decorated eggs are often displayed at Easter, they aren’t only associated with Christianity and the end of Lent (in Mediaeval times eggs were off the menu during Lent). Since they symbolise fertility and rebirth, eggs are often given to newly-married couples or passed between families to share good fortune at new year. As a result, you’ll see lots of different styles of egg decoration when traveling the world. 

 

Crochet Easter Eggs are much more robust than the delicately blown painted and dyed eggs you may have seen before. In Germany, brightly-coloured eggs are hung up around the home during Easter time, often in groups for maximum impact. If you prefer, you can place several eggs in a bowl or basket. Add some scrunched up crepe paper to create the effect of a nest. You could even use the eggs for a Easter Egg Hunt.

knitshop.co.uk’s pretty Easter Egg pattern is based on the colourful designs found in Germany, where knitshop.co.uk founder Julieta Brandao hails from. The eggs are crocheted using Cotton DK Yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook. You will also need some soft toy stuffing for the middle of each egg, we recommend Eider Wool Tops. 

 

There are nine shades in the knitshop.co.uk Cotton DK Yarn range, all of which are bright and cheerful. The yarns come in 100g skeins and are 80m long. This means you’ll have enough to make several eggs – or use the remainder for making lightweight springtime knits.

The Easter Egg pattern suggests you use three or four different colours of yarn to create your egg. If you prefer you can stick to a smart two-tone stripe.

The eggs are made using double crochet chains, so the pattern is suitable for even novice crocheters. You also need to be able to crochet two double chains together in order to work the decreases to shape your egg. The eggs are crocheted in rounds, so it’s easy to change yarn colour. The Crochet Easter Egg pattern clearly indicates where you should switch to a new colour.
