Country Wool Yarn - new in stock

Today we would like to introduce to you a brand new yarn added to the knitshop.co.uk yarn collection: Country Wool Yarn.

Country Wool Yarn is a 100% pure wool yarn and is unevenly spun, so it has a unique country style to it, due to it's coarse look. It gives an interesting texture once knitted up, feels soft and will definitely keep you warm.

Colours from left top: Primary Colours, Hot Pink, Bondi Blue, Corsa Rosso Red, Crosswalks,
Mustard, Zaffre Blue, Orange Peel, Rainbow, Harlequin, Forest Green & Spring Meadow

Country Wool Yarn is ideal for accessories and garments, such as wrist warmers, hats, gloves, cardigans and jumpers. However, the idea of what you make should be yours. Below, you will find a few yarn recommendations from our pattern catalogue.

Corsa Rosso Red Country Wool Yarn
in Double Moss Stitch Pattern.

The tension is somewhere between a 4ply and DK yarn, which makes it a sports weight or 5ply yarn. Tension on stocking stitch comes up to 24 sts x 36 rows using 3.25 mm needles. A 50g ball has a length of 195m and is available at the introductory price of £2.95 this spring.

Solid colours available: Buttercream, Raw Umber, Harlequin, Forest Green, Rosso Corsa Red, Orange Peel, Mustard, Hot Pink, Zaffre Blue and Bondi Blue.

Variegated colours:
Crosswalks a combination of red, dark green and yellow.
Rainbow - Red, Orange, yellow, turquoise and bright green.
Primary Colours, the classics - blue, red, orange and yellow.
Spring Meadow - greens and yellow, almost like looking at a meadow in spring, spring greens with yellow flowers!

Rainbow Country Wool Yarn

Here are a few patterns from our current pattern selection that could be used for County Wool Yarn.

REO Wrist Warmer would look lovely in any of the colours available in Country Wool Yarn.

Jasper Pull-Over definitely a great choice for Country Wool Yarn, we would recommend using the colours Bondi Blue and Mustard, or Raw Umber and Rosso Corsa Red. Or alternatively you could make it using Rainbow and Orange, or Primary Colour and Zaffre Blue.

And our third recommendation for today are the Snug Boot Cuffs. Make them matching the colour of your boots or in variegated Rainbow colours. No matter which colour you choose they are guaranteed to keep you warm and trendy!

Cable Nation Scarf Pattern

Do the twist with knitshop.co.uk’s Cable Nation scarf pattern

Looking for a new project to get stuck into and perhaps learn a new knitting technique as you go? knitshop.co.uk tutor Marcia Hamilton’s exclusive Cable Nation scarf pattern is a great addition to our pattern library and ideal for honing your cable knitting skills. Most of the pattern is created using knit and purl stitches, with a single cable running down the centre of the scarf.

Cable Nation Pattern knitted in Kolibri Wool Yarn

Cable Nation knits up quickly on 6mm knitting needles with the edging finished off using a 6mm crochet hook. If you don’t have a cable needle you can use your crochet hook to hold the stitches when working the cable pattern. If you don’t crochet, you can easily make the scarf lay flat by blocking it once you’ve finished knitting it.

A great scarf to keep you warm and still look smart!

You’ll need around 100-150m of chunky or aran weight yarn to make this scarf, so it’s also a great project if you’ve got a single skein of yarn. Marcia designed this chunky pattern for knitshop.co.uk’s popular Kolibri Wool Yarn. The contrasting yellow and turquoise shades in this variegated pure wool yarn are really striking.

To show off the cables to full effect you might prefer a solid colour. The natural shades of our Alpaca Quito yarn would be a good choice. Alpaca yarn is very soft and will feel very snug.

cable knit of Cable Nation.
For a more elegant look use Mohair Silk or pure Silk Yarn.

You could also make the Cable Nation scarf in knitshop.co.uk’s Thick And Easy Yarn or our Natural Wool Tweed – you’ll need 7mm or 8mm needles.

Our Mohair Silk Yarn or Mulberry Silk Twist range is a great choice if you want a slightly narrower, more elegant and less bulky scarf. A single 250m skein would make a satisfyingly long scarf to envelop you.

The Cable Nation scarf pattern costs £2.50 and is available as a PDF download from our online pattern library. If you get stuck with any of the techniques in our patterns, we’re always happy to give you a hand. Just email us or, if you live locally, come along to one of our free monthly SOS workshops. Held on the last Friday of each month, these where you can drop in and get help with projects you’ve started but can’t complete.

As with all our workshops, you need to book a place in advance by following the link and selecting ‘self pick-up’ at the checkout. Workshops take place at our boutique outlet at 326 Lee High Road, SE13 5PJ from 11am to 1pm.

Keep the chills away with Snug Boot Cuffs

It’s that awkward in-between time of the year. It isn’t yet spring, but the weather’s far too nice for staying indoors. Rather than be cooped up any longer, pull on your boots and coat and stride out for a healthy walk. If you pop a pair of boot-toppers on too, you’ll be in no danger of getting cold ankles or legs.
Snug Boot Cuffs knitted in Mustard Yellow Socks Yarn

knitshop.co.uk’sSnug Boot Cuffs are ideal. They’re a one-skein knit that’s both simple and seam-free. You need 100g of knitshop.co.uk Sock Yarn – the brighter and more colourful the colour, the better. We’ve used Mustard Yellow Sock Yarn in our example, but this 80% wool, 20% ramie yarn comes in a deep Bordeaux Red, vibrant Green and a choice of blues too.

These stylish and warm Boot Cuffs have been designed by
knitshop.co.uk owner Julieta I. Brandao

Snug Boot Cuffs are knitted in the round on either 3mm double-pointed or 3mm circular needles using an easy-to-remember combination of knits and purls. There’s no shaping involved, so this is a great first project if you’re new to knitting in the round. You’ll also find it useful to place a stitch marker at the start of each round.
As an alternative to Sock Yarn, you could knit your Snug Boot Cuffs using knitshop.co.uk’s luxuriously soft Alpaca Fino Yarn and take your pick from even more gloriously colourful shades. Alpaca Fino comes in a choice of 20 shades including Burnt Orange, Peacock-Teal, Pink, Red and Moss Green.

snug, warm and comfortable,
a must have accessory for the cold-warm season!

knitshop.co.uk’s Snug Boot Cuffs pattern is a really fast knit, so you could check the weather in the morning and whip up a pair in time for your post-lunch stroll. Because there are no seams to sew, you only have a couple of ends to darn in once you’ve finished knitting.
Since each 100g skein of our Sock Yarn contains 300m of yarn, you could also make a short pair of matching wrist warmers from the rest of the ball – not bad for a total cost of less than £8 for the yarn and pattern http://www.knitshop.co.uk/knitshop-pattern/3010-snug-boot-cuffs.html.

Twist And Shout cowl pattern

We all love a quick knit that can be whipped up in seemingly no time but which immediately becomes a wardrobe staple. We think our brand-new Twist And Shout cowl pattern is destined to become just such a much-loved knit. The pattern gets its name from being a cowl with a twist. The ‘shout’ part of its name is because it’s knitted in superchunky yarn that you just can’t ignore.

Twist And Shout by Marcia Hamilton.

Twist And Shout was designed for knitshop.co.uk by our very own Marcia Hamilton in super chunky Merino Wool Yarn/Roving. This all-natural yarn comes in a choice of 10 shades and knits best on 12mm needles. For this pattern we recommend using 100cm circular needles

large enough to wear it over your head!

knitshop.co.uk’s Merino Wool Roving Yarn comes in 200g hanks – you’ll need two for this cowl. If you prefer, you can make a two-tone Twist And Shout cowl using contrasting colours of yarn. The pattern includes instructions for when to switch colours. We’ve used White Merino Wool Roving Yarn for our version, while the two-colour version shown in the pattern uses Merino Wool Roving Yarn in Sky Blue for the contrast colour. The yarn also comes in striking shades such as Hot Pink and Yellow

Twist And Shout Version 2 in White and Sky Blue.

The cowl can either be knitted with a half twist to make a Mobius cowl, or with a full twist. Once you’ve joined your round and started knitting, you’ll find this rib stitch project grows ever so quickly. That’s the beauty of superchunky knitting projects. Because Twist And Shout is knitted in the round, there’s no sewing up to be done either.
What’s more, we’ve also got a perfect pattern to knit as an accompaniment to this fab cowl pattern. Our Roving Wrist Warmers were also designed to be knitted in Merino Wool Roving Yarn. These easy-to-make mitts can be knitted in a single colour or in two contrasting shades. We kept them super-simple and used stocking stitch for the Roving Wrist Warmers, but you could easily knit them in rib to match your Twist And Shout cowl.

Roving Wrist Warmer Pattern.

The patterns cost £3 apiece and are available for instant download once you check out. As with all our patterns, full after-sales support advice is provided.

Simply Wool Yarn

Get felting with knitshop.co.uk Simply Wool Yarn

Simply Wool is a lovely double knit weight yarn made from nothing but 100 percent sheep’s wool. It knits up on 3.75mm to 4.5mm needles and is ideal for whipping up cosy tops and outerwear really quickly. Just 21 stitches over 24 rows makes a 10cm tension square. Once you start knitting, your projects will grow really fast.

Simply Wool Yarn in Yellow, Purple and Ocean Blue

Each 100g ball of Simply Wool has a meterage of approx 200m, so you only need a couple of balls to mak a scarf or a jacket for a toddler. At £5.90 per ball, this means it’s pretty good value too.

The lovely yarn is used as the basis of some of knitshop.co.uk customers’ favourite patterns, including the snug Fairisle Wrist Warmer. Another great example is the Simply Stripes Kids’ Waistcoat, which uses just two skeins of Simply Wool. (or three if you’d like to use two different colours of stripe as well as the main body colour).

Kids Simply Waistcoat and Hat Pattern Set

Of course, Simply Wool lends itself to crochet too – you could make some stunning cushions with it. But where it really comes into its own is as a yarn for felting.

Felted Bag using Simply Wool in Deep Pink and Turquoise

The process of knitting and felting is also called fulling. This simply means that the woolen fabric is shrunk and matted to a thick and solid piece. A knitted piece of woolen fabric is placed into the washing machine and the felting happens due to the friction and agitation of the wool. You can make many different items using this felting technique. Amongst those most popular are bags, slippers and hats. All you need is a 100% wool yarn or a wool blended yarn with another animal fibre that shrinks.

Knit-Felted Rabbit made from Simply Wool Yarn

knitshop.co.uk's Simply Wool Yarn is perfect for fulling. 25 amazing shades are available for you to choose from, including vibrant Orange, Tomato Red, zingy Purple, Raspberry Red and Ocean Blue. Subtler shades include Cream, pure White, light Lilac and medium Grey-Aquamarine. Visit knitshop.co.uk now to view the full colour range.

Christmas Gifts

The knitshop.co.uk understand how difficult it can be to find the perfect gift for someone special. Christmas is just around the corner and many of you will be thinking of what you can find for relatives and friends.

We have conveniently put together some ideal gift sets that would sit perfectly under the tree and make a knitter, crocheter and felter very happy. These gifts are also a fantastic idea for crafty people who are perhaps interested in becoming involved in knitting, crochet and felting and need a little encouragement.

Firstly, the knitshop.co.uk offer gift vouchers. All year round and especially at Christmas our gift vouchers, for varying amounts, are purchased for keen knitters who may need to top-up on yarns, needles, patterns and books. We recommend knitshop.co.uk vouchers for anyone who may not know what to buy a knitter, the vouchers can be used in-store and online and are valid for anything the knitshop.co.uk offer including the various workshops and courses on offer.

We also create knitting, crochet and felting kits, which we feel is a fabulous gift for beginners or improver looking to work on their skills. Our kits will contain all tools and materials needed to achieve one complete project as well as the all important instructions and handy-tips leaflet.

The kits make a great gift for children and adults and the instructions are easy to follow for all ages. We endeavour to make sure the skills picked-up from the kits can further be applied to projects the artist can later work on by their selves. An endless gift of learning and improving is priceless. Our felting kits start at £4.98.

Books are a welcome gift any time of year. From pattern books to inspirational books and magazine, knitshop.co.uk offers all of these, and we are happy to help you find the perfect book or magazine for that someone you love. We have a huge variety of coffee table books with beautiful images and inspirational projects, to dedicated pattern books and even beginner books and self-teaching books. A book is something that is kept for many years, can be referred to over and over again and most people will appreciate a book under the tree!

Magazine are also ideal, we offer several key knitting magazines that offer several monthly patterns, regular articles about knitting artists and designers and have up-to date information about materials, boutiques and emerging techniques, machinery and more.

We also recommend our workshops and courses as a perfect gift for a creative loved one. knitshop.co.uk offers a huge amount of regular workshops during the week and at weekends. Designed for beginner, improver or technically advanced knitters, crocheters and felters there is a workshop for everyone.

Workshops will last for two hours and have a maximum of eight students. Julieta Brandao will lead the workshop and her and the knitshop team endeavour to go at a pace that all students can manage and each person will receive individual attention. The workshop will also include all tools and materials necessary to achieve the project and the two hours should be enough for everyone to complete a finished project. The skills learnt at the workshop can be used in further projects within the students own time.
knitshop.co.uk also offer 6 week courses for knitting, crochet and felting. In these courses, beginners and improver can learn the basic skills to begin knitting, crocheting or felting and progressively through the weeks the candidate will learn useful techniques, how to read patterns and how to choose yarns for each project. These valuable skills will hopefully encourage students to carry-on in their own time and progress further within their chosen discipline.

Courses and workshops can be purchased online, in-store or over the phone and will be a much appreciated gift for someone creative. Workshops start at just £12 for a two hour session and are held in Lee Green South London.
